Alinta Energy has been supplying energy to Australians for over 20 years, operating in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and South East Queensland. Selling gas and electricity to over 100 million customers, and employing over 800 staff, Alinta Energy is committed to providing reliable and affordable energy, while also ensuring a sustainable future.
Alinta Energy has around 60 contractors engaged at any given time across their business units. Historically, contractors were engaged directly or thorough multiple recruitment agencies.
According to Carrie Luzar, Remuneration and Operations Manager – People & Culture:
“Our contingent workforce was largely unmanaged, impacting:
- Visibility of our contractor workforce, preventing effective management of our office spaces, IT assets and agency panels
- Compliance around tax, super, insurance, safety and IT security
- Cost control and operational efficiency
In addition, there was no clear process for hiring managers or contractors around the engagement, management and disengagement steps.”
Alinta Energy were seeking to appoint a provider to manage the contractor lifecycle, to allow:
- Reporting on contractor headcount, location, costs and duration
- Employment via a third-party organisation to remove key risks around payroll tax, super and insurance
- Clear linkages with relevant areas to minimise other risks around safety, IT, onboarding, compliance training
- A clear process for engaging, extending and exiting contractors that improves the experience for the manager and the worker.
In 2019, Alinta Energy selected CXC as a partner to support the engagement, payroll, management and offboarding of contractors.
CXC’s approach to implementation
CXC’s partnership began with a comprehensive implementation process. Our implementation team work to a Prince2 methodology to manage our client implementation and transition programs.
Before the project began, CXC assisted Carrie and her team with building a business case to promote the model to the wider business. This involved:
- Data discovery to get an indication of scale
- A commercial analysis
- Process flow examples to explain the improvement in user experience
According to Carrie…
“There was a detailed discovery process using a number of datasets to identify our population, and with a number of workshops to gather ideas and feedback from various stakeholders.
The project team were extremely experienced and provided a wealth of knowledge in coming up with our design and throughout the implementation. They were definitely a trusted partner in the process and managed a number of curve balls, coming up with flexible solutions that met the brief.
There was a wealth of examples and templates available and a clear communications plan. We always felt that CXC had strong industry knowledge and understood the details.”
Although still early in the program, CXC is exactly the kind of partner we’re looking for. I’m confident in our ability to enhance our contingent workforce further into the future.”
Alinta Energy experienced a seamless, efficient implementation. Alinta Energy now have an efficient, customer-centric program, providing them with visibility, compliance and cost control of their contractor workforce. Their contractors are receiving a seamless onboarding and management experience, allowing them to focus on the essential work they provide to Alinta Energy.
According to Carrie…
“The implementation was managed as a project, with all the right resources and infrastructure. We had a fantastic project manager who kept everything on track and used a number of tools to ensure actions were tracked and resolved. The level of communication and consultation was high – it was a real partnership. We had a seamless transition between project and BAU phases.
The final outcome is exactly what we needed – overall there’s been a significant uplift in process and compliance. CXC are highly recommended. We really value the calibre of the team and flexibility of the solution, as well as their willingness to work through challenges.”
