Recent developments in Hungary

Employment law is always changing, and keeping up with it is a lot of work. Thankfully, our team closely monitors the latest developments, so you don’t have to. Below are the key employment-related changes applicable in Hungary in 2026.

Increased Minimum Wage (2026)

From 1 January 2026, the statutory minimum wage for full-time employees increased to HUF 322,800 gross per month. The guaranteed wage minimum—applicable to roles requiring at least secondary education or vocational qualifications, rose to HUF 373,200 gross per month.

Remote Work Cost Reimbursement (2026)

Employers may provide remote and teleworkers with a tax-exempt flat-rate reimbursement for home office expenses. The maximum reimbursable amount is set at 10% of the monthly minimum wage, replacing earlier fixed allowances and automatically adjusting with future minimum wage changes.

Employment Termination Rules (2026)

The general statutory notice period remains 30 days, with possible extensions based on length of service when termination is initiated by the employer. There has been no general reduction in notice periods for fixed-term contracts; early termination continues to be governed by existing Labour Code rules.

Parental Leave Framework (2026)

Hungary’s existing parental leave regime continues to apply in 2026. This includes maternity leave, parental benefits, and unpaid parental leave options. No new statutory extensions to paid parental leave were introduced in 2026.

Working Time and Availability (2026)

Hungary has not adopted a standalone “right to disconnect” law. Employee availability outside normal working hours continues to be regulated through existing working time, rest period, and overtime provisions, as well as internal employer policies or collective agreements.
