To say that the concept of “work” has evolved is an understatement. The rise of remote work, combined with the demand for independent contractors and consultants has paved the way for a new breed of workers—digital nomads.

Today, digital nomads can work from the comfort of their homes, from a beachside cabana in Bali, or even a dainty cafe in Thailand. A lot of digital nomads travel and work at the same time. Then there are some who would like to stay longer in some destinations and set up some kind of “home away from home.” Thankfully, countries have responded!

Several countries in Asia have recently launched digital nomad visas. These allow remote workers to stay for an extended period without the need for a traditional work visa or work permit. These visas can provide you with a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultures, connect with other like-minded professionals, and expand your global horizons.

Indonesia: for those who want to experience a vibrant culture of sky, surf, sand, and lush jungles

Indonesia, especially Bali, has become quite a tourist destination. Its gorgeous landscapes, green jungles, and crystal-clear waters ensure that digital nomads will have no shortage of activities to do.

For adrenaline junkies, Bali has plenty to offer—surfing, diving, hiking, you name it. At the same time, its beaches also cater to digital nomads who just want to chill and relax beside the sand and the sea. When it comes to cuisine, spicy curries, grilled seafood, fresh fruits, and rice will keep your stomach and heart full.

Indonesia is also a thriving startup community, and you’ll find plenty of co-working spaces and co-living amenities on the island.

Digital Nomad Visa Details and Requirements:

  • The Second Home Visa is valid for five years
  • Visa holders can sponsor spouses and children
  • Proof of financial capacity by showing a bank account statement with at least IDR 2 Billion or $ 137,000 USD.
  • Proof of ownership of health or travel insurance

Thailand: for those who love flavorful cuisine and majestic architecture

Thailand has become really popular for a lot of backpackers mostly due to its affordable cost of living. The country has a unique mix of modern vibes while still retaining its traditional charm—making it very ideal for both work and play.

Chiang Mai temples, Bangkok markets, exotic food, and beautiful beaches—Thailand really is the perfect place to indulge.

Digital Nomad Visa Details and Requirements:

  • If you plan to only stay for 30 days or less, you can go the visa-exempt route which is 30-day visa-free allowed stay. This can also be extended for another 30 days.
  • There is also a single-entry tourist visa that allows digital nomads to stay for 60 to 90 days, which can also be extended.
  • For those planning to stay even longer, the Non-Immigrant O visa (90-day) + O visa extension for 1 year is the best arrangement. This requires a Thai bank account with 800,000 THB or a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB, or the combination of annual income and bank account balance is larger than 800,000 THB.

Malaysia: for travelers who love a mix of culture, cuisine, and natural landscapes

Malaysia is a melting pot. It’s a great destination for digital nomads who want to experience a diverse and affordable culture and lifestyle with delicious cuisine day in and day out.

In Malaysia, you get the extremes: a bustling city with excellent infrastructure, public transportation, clubs, and speakeasies, but you can also easily access laidback beaches for day offs. For outdoorsy people, Malaysia is also home to gorgeous natural landscapes like tropical rainforests and mountain ranges.

Digital Nomad Visa Details and Requirements:

  • Valid for 12 months
  • The visa holder can bring family members and must pay an additional fee of RM500 or $112 for each dependent
  • An annual income of $24,000 for foreigners
  • Health insurance is required
  • Proof of digital nomad work

Taiwan: for the street food enthusiasts

Another warm and welcoming country, Taiwan is a small island nation that has friendly people, busy night markets, and stunning natural wonders. The country also offers a blend of East Asian culture and modern amenities.

Digital nomads in Taiwan will enjoy fast and reliable internet speeds, coworking spaces, and a strong community of remote workers. On your day-offs, you can explore towering mountains, forests, beaches, and hot springs.

Digital Nomad Visa Details and Requirements:

  • Valid for one to three years
  • Also doubles as a work permit
  • Applicants must earn at least $5,700 a month
  • Their profession or industry should fall under these fields: architecture, culture and arts, economy, education, finance, law, science and technology, sports, and national defense.
